We Read to Know We're Not Alone

April 2, 2015 by Chuck Beckler

I heard the phrase years ago in a movie about C.S. Lewis: we read to know we're not alone. At first I didn't think much about it, but it's grown on me. The idea that a whole lot of people are on the same journey that I'm on seemed appealing to me. Life does have its universal issues and some that are very unique to each of us. So why not investigate that philosophy?

I've not always been a voracious reader, and I don't think you'd describe my reading habits with that word. I enjoy a good book like perhaps most of us do, especially if it suits my taste. I love theology, history, poerty and accurate biography! And of course the Word of God! I really love to learn and there's so much of that to do. So to think that I can sit at the feet of some of the great teachers of life is incredible. Not only to be instructed by them but to identify with them. Whether it's any of the aforementioned categories or others you might be thinking of, reading develops an intimate connection with the author. Think about it! Their words flow through our minds and begin to saturate our souls. We feel, relate, identify and often say something like this, "it sounds like my world." The lessons from others lives can be invaluable. It goes back to the words, "we read to know we're not alone."

Lately I've been reading a World War II trilogy, Amy Carmichael, Banner of Truth issues and some Robert Burns. I've also been hanging out with Paul in Romans and Luke as he shares the Great Story. I've journeyed to the beaches of Normandy, Jerusalem, India, England and the Highlands of Scotland. I've felt the struggle of the great apostle in Romans 7 and I know I'm not alone. Think about it! I'll be back with more as I think about too.
